The Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at the University Campus Bio-Medico of Rome has been ranked as the Number One Italian University for the Quality of Research, and it is leader in the surgical treatment of musculoskeletal diseases.
• One of our worldwide recognized fields of excellence is Spine Surgery, aimed to the management of degenerative, tumor and trauma conditions. Among these, we outline the surgery at the Cervical Spine and Tumor Surgery. This latter can be realized by low invasiveness surgical techniques for patients with advanced diseases, or in selected patients, by complete surgical excision with combined surgical approaches.
• We do perform frontline Replacement Surgery of the major joints, including Minimally Invasive Hip Arthroplasty surgery, Navigation Assisted Knee Arthroplasty and Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty.
• Regarding Osteoncology, we are leader in the surgical replacement at the major joints (Hip, Knee and Shoulder), and in the Osteosyntesis for Fractures or Impending Fractures of the long bones, by the use of innovative instrumentation systems.
• We are leading center for Sport Medicine and Traumatology, for the management of ligament, tendons and cartilage lesions at the knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle, managed by Minimally Invasive Arthroscopic Techniques and by the use of Growth Factors and Stem Cells

Surgery at the foot and ankle and at the hand are aimed to the functional recovery of the upper and lower limbs, and determine an early impact on the patient’s indipendence and return to activity
• We developed the Trauma Unit for the management of skeletal traumas and fractures by low invasiveness techniques, to restore the function of the severely affected limbs.

Cartilage Regeneration Techniques
Articular cartilage defects are common in orthopedic practice, with current treatments yielding acceptable short-term results. Tissue engineering techniques are being employed with aims of repopulating a cartilage defect with hyaline cartilage containing living chondrocytes with hopes of improving clinical outcomes. Cartilage tissue engineering broadly involves the use of three components: cell source, biomaterial / membranes, and/or growth stimulators, either alone or in any combination. This kind of practice is commonly use when the cartilage damage is not so expanded.
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine encompasses a group of professionals from various disciplines whose focus is the health of an athlete, concerning the investigation, preservation, and restoration by medical, surgical, and rehabilitative means to all structures of the musculoskeletal system affected by athletic activity.
*Anterior/Posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL reconstruction) is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament, located in the knee
*Meniscal repairing and postoperative rehabilitation Athletes who play contact sports are particularly at risk for tears in the pad of cartilage that protects the knee joint, known as the meniscus.
Total knee replacement (TKR) surgery has become a commonly performed and highly successful surgical procedure. Computer navigation system, guiding the surgeon through the implantation of a total knee replacement, is the newest innovation. At Campus Bio-Medico Hospital a Software-guided Knee Surgery helps surgeons to ensure better alignment and accurate results in total knee replacement. We use a surgical guidance system providing a compact, electronic guidance designed to help surgeons align and validate bony resections in realtime.
